Oyster Perpetual Milgauss
A WATCH FOR THOSE WHO REBUILT THE WORLD
Rolex has a watch for every occasion, every profession, and for every environment. Just like there are specific dress, casual, diving, and navigation models, there is a model that is specifically designed for those who spend their time in a highly magnetic environment such as a power plant, a research lab, or a hospital. Everyone who ever wore an analogue watch knows the kind of havoc that magnetic interference can wreak on your timepiece. In the mid 1950's Rolex saw a real need to produce a watch capable of withstanding magnetic fluctuations, thus Rolex Millgauss was born.
WHY MILGAUSS IS SPECIAL
The name Milgauss comes from the Latin word "mille" meaning one thousand and "gauss" or the unit of measure used to measure magnetism. As the name implies, the Rolex Milgauss is capable of keeping accurate time in the magnetic environment up to 1000 gauss. The original Rolex Milgauss model closely resembled a Rolex Submariner due to its oversized case that housed a Faraday Cage- like anti-magnetic structure. The anti-magnetic properties of the watch were largely dependent on the three-tiered soft iron case as well as a soft iron dial which blocked out the fast moving magnetic fields. Although 1950's Rolex Milgauss is so similar to a Sabmariner at first glance, its unmistakable lightning bolt seconds hand gives it away. The early models of the Milgauss are among the most collectable vintage Rolex watches today.
THE NEW DESIGN
In 2007, Rolex brought back the discontinued Migauss but with a new design. The current model of the Rolex Milgauss features a new Parachrome-blue hairspring which is anti-magnetic to begin with and was first used in the 2005 model of Rolex GMT Master II. Even with the incorporation of the Parachrom technology, Milgauss still remains thicker then the Submariner, although it weighs 157 grams. Although Rolex has made some changes to the new version of the Milgauss, they did bring back the coveted , orange lightning bolt seconds hand as a throwback to the 1950's models.
Rolex Milgauss is a brilliantly designed tool watch with a rich innovation history. The early, 1950-1970 models are highly collectable and are incredibly rare. The 2007 models are extremely accurate and are also likely to raise in value due to their limited release.
